Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are a valuable marine conservation tool used around the world. Like national parks and other protected areas on land, MPAs safeguard critical ocean habitat, allowing sensitive marine communities to recover and thrive. The concept behind MPAs is quite simple: place some special parts of the ocean off limits to destructive activities, and give those special places a chance to recover and rebound. But an important part of the MPA network is making sure the public is aware they exist!
Many partners are working across California to increase enforcement, compliance and overall awareness of California’s network of MPAs.
We encourage you to check out the Outreach Toolkit to view the many different outreach resources created for California’s MPA network.
